Reading and Writing for Their Lives: An Integrated Approach

60 Minutes

All too often students believe that reading and writing are not for them. As a result, their literacy muscles atrophy. While it is not within a teacher’s power to pry smartphones from students’ hands, we can create classroom environments where reading and writing are geared towards achieving students’ own ends. By igniting interest in culturally responsive texts and inviting students to respond with powerful prompts, engagement soars. Exercising their literacy muscles, students develop both confidence and competence as readers and writers.

In this recorded edWebinar, viewers will learn strategies for:

  • Fostering independence while scaffolding instruction for hesitant students
  • Selecting culturally responsive readings
  • Embedding social-emotional learning (SEL) in literacy lessons
  • Helping students become invested in their own writing
  • Choosing contemporary books to pique student interest

This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders of the middle and high school levels.
