HMH Social Studies Middle School: Research Evidence Base

At a glance

The challenges and the potency of social studies instruction within our nation's schools are both bountiful and timeless (Beard, 1929).

HMH Social Studies helps middle school-level social studies teachers realize their goals for their students: to learn actively, think critically, and participate responsibly. A variety of materials and enrichment activities, including inquiry-based resources, aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies's C3 Framework support learning preferences, and with flexible assignments and assessment, the program allows teachers to personalize instruction and provide instant feedback on student progress. By delivering compelling narratives enriched with HISTORY® streaming videos and interactive graphics, maps, and games, the program connects students to social studies through experiences that are dynamic, inspiring, and memorable—as well as continually updated.

HMH Social Studies is also built upon a strong evidence base, so schools can be assured that the program provides content and pedagogy with proven efficacy and that it supports teachers in best practices. The program's foundational research is outlined in detail within this document.
