The Code Placement Assessment (CPA) provides three foundational literacy skills assessments that are used to diagnose, place students, and track progress in foundational skills mastery throughout the year. Students whose CPA results indicate gaps in foundational skills will be automatically placed into Student App Code Segments where they will receive systematic, individualized instruction to help close skills gaps.

The three CPA assessments are identical in number and types of questions but are slightly tailored to reflect the timing of each assessment's intended administration.

  • Code Placement Assessment 1 is intended for diagnostic screening use at the beginning of the school year. On CPA 1, the high-frequency words that students are asked to recognize come from early Code Segments.
  • Code Placement Assessment 2 is used as a mid-year progress monitoring check-in. On CPA 2, the high-frequency words come from Code Segments toward the middle of the scope and sequence.
  • Code Placement Assessment 3 is used as a final, end-of-year evaluation of students' growth in their foundational literacy skills. On CPA 3, the high-frequency words come from later Code Segments.

The CPA is embedded within the Read 180® Student Application. Students are candidates for the Code Placement Assessment if their Lexile is below 400L® (elementary) or 600L® (secondary) or equal to or below a RIT score of 184 (upper elementary) or 195 (secondary) on the NWEA MAP® Growth™ assessment.
