Core Curriculum
Dr. Terry Salinger is an Institute Fellow and Chief Scientist for Literacy Research at AIR. For almost 25 years, she has conducted research focusing on reading acquisition and assessment and on assessment of teacher professional knowledge. She recently led the first rigorous evaluation of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and has been the project director on several rigorous evaluations of reading interventions in various school settings. She was the principal investigator of an NCER grant that developed and validated an assessment of teacher knowledge of beginning reading. Dr. Salinger came to AIR in 1997 to lead item development for the Voluntary National Test, and she has led several district and state assessment development efforts. She has served on test development and advisory committees for the National Center for Education Statistics and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). She led the work to develop the framework and specifications for the 2009 NAEP reading assessment. After receiving her master’s at the Bank Street College of Education, she taught for 10 years in public schools in Brooklyn. Dr. Salinger has a doctorate in reading, with dual emphases on statistics and instructional practice.
