Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Donation Makes Possible Union Hill Elementary School Library

BOSTON -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the donation of 5,000 books to the Union Hill Elementary School in Worcester, Mass., which will enable the opening of its new student library.  Through a continued partnership with the Worcester Public Schools community, HMH’s donation serves as a major cornerstone of the project. Worcester city officials will join Union Hill principal Marie Morse and representatives from HMH at today’s dedication ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. at the school.

“HMH continually strives to improve teaching and learning environments at schools like Union Hill,” said Mary Cullinane, Senior Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, HMH.  “We’re proud that this donation will make a school library possible for the Union Hill School.  Libraries are important resources that foster academic growth, inspire creativity, and provide access to the voices and ideas of others.”

The new library is the result of a community service project launched by Worcester Academy students as part of the Destination ImagiNation program, a nonprofit organization devoted to teaching creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.  Community volunteers worked to clean, paint, and organize the space that would become the library.  Several organizations in the community came together to donate all of the books and services necessary to make the Union Hill library possible.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we’ve received from our partners,” said Marie Morse, Principal, Union Hill Elementary School.  “Through the hard work and dedication of a multitude of individuals, we are able to offer our students the invaluable resource of a new library.”

HMH is committed to being a long-term partner of Worcester Public Schools, one of the largest school districts in Massachusetts.  In November 2011, HMH announced a specialized, multifaceted education solution tailored specifically for the school district, which was aimed to boost parent engagement, foster a digital culture, and promote connectivity.
