Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Launches HMH Readers; New iPad App Provides Customizable Reading Experience for Kids K-6

BOSTON -- Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) announced today that HMH Readers, its new iPad reading app developed for Common Core Standards mastery, is now available for free download in the iTunes App Store.  Designed to supplement the Journeys and Literacy by Design reading programs, HMH Readers features K-6 grade-appropriate non-fiction and fiction texts to reinforce reading skills, promote academic vocabulary acquisition and improve reading fluency and comprehension in young readers.  The mobile device app enhances reading instruction with bookmarking, audio and highlighting, engaging students in the classroom and beyond.

HMH Readers encourages a truly mobile learning experience that supports today’s on-the-go families,” said Bethlam Forsa, Executive Vice President, Global Product and Content Development, HMH.  “This tool underscores HMH’s commitment to providing educators, students and caregivers with innovative, fun resources that reinforce top-notch literacy education, nurture love of learning and spark curiosity.”

Upon launching the app, students see their available readers displayed in the “My Readers” library.  With the tap of an icon, they can isolate grade-level readers or search the collection by title or author.  While reading, students can tap to hear the text spoken aloud, see highlighted words, zoom for a full screen view and bookmark pages for easy return.  With vibrant images and intuitive navigation, HMH Readers supports mobile versions of over 1,300 Journeys and Literacy by Design leveled readers, allowing users to enjoy a new dimension to reading.

The HMH Readers app comes with a free leveled reader sample.  Parents can buy additional reader packages for $2.99 per grade level by simply tapping the Parent-Child icon in the virtual library.  School users will receive a code from HMH that will enable them to download the readers purchased by their institution.

The Journeys and Literacy by Design reading programs, both aligned to Common Core State Standards, have been adopted in schools throughout the country, offering educators a versatile collection of resources to get students reading, thinking, discussing and writing about text.  The curriculums employ leading educational technologies, from mobile apps and content to interactive whiteboard lessons and online teaching and assessment components designed to support student growth and success.
