Into Math® Version 2

Into Math is a Grades K–Algebra 1 core mathematics curriculum built on the tenets of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). The program balances conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application while delivering a rigorous curriculum that is inclusive and equitable. Its student-centered, teacher-facilitated instruction engages students in mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and discourse while building new knowledge on existing understanding. Into Math also provides integrated resources for planning, instruction, assessment, differentiation, intervention, family outreach, and professional learning through HMH Ed™, the HMH learning platform.

Into Math is organized  into modules with sequenced lessons that follow a consistent, predictable instructional flow designed for whole-class instruction. Each lesson iincludes a Learning Goal Routine, a Spark Your Learning task, task-based learning, Turn & Talk opportunities, Language Routines, embedded supports, and a Quick Check that informs differentiation options. The Teacher’s Guide provides a consistent structure  and clearly outlines how to use the program at every step of instruction.

Into Math develops fluency through a progression that begins with conceptual reasoning and moves toward procedural application, with the structure of Spark Your Learning and rich tasks naturally following this research-based flow. Students start with tasks that engage them in reasoning and modeling, then transition to applying procedures with increasing efficiency and accuracy, ensuring that fluency is grounded in understanding, not memorization. Into Math provides multiple pathways for students to strengthen efficiency and accuracy through Fluency Worksheets, games that promote distributed practice and fact fluency, and Waggle, an adaptive personalized practice tool that aligns to Into Math standards and delivers ongoing fluency work tailored to each student’s needs.

Into Math is purposefully designed to develop self-driven problem solvers by fostering student agency, productive perseverance, and a positive math mindset. Each lesson begins with a Spark Your Learning task that invites students to bring their own thoughts to the math concept, while Open Middle® problems, authored by Robert Kaplinsky, push students beyond memorizing formulas into deeper thinking by requiring them to reason, make decisions, and try different strategies. Students also experience hands-on learning through Into Math’s Projects feature, which includes project-based learning activities that make math relevant through real-world connections, problem solving, and critical analysis.

High-quality student discourse is embedded at every turn in Into Math, developing versatile collaboration and communication skills and supporting all levels of language learners. Targeted routines and language development scaffolds are embedded in the Teacher Guide to help facilitate acquisition of the language of math. Language Routines, Language Routine Partner Activities, and Peer Coach videos help students practice high-quality mathematical discourse with models and structures that help them see how and when to use them, the power of doing them correctly, and the feedback they need to continue to deepen their thinking. World of Math offers low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that connect learning to history, culture, careers, and everyday life, encouraging students to collaborate, engage in rich discourse, and apply math in real-world contexts.

Into Math embeds visual models, manipulatives, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) supports throughout every lesson, offering multiple pathways into meaning that are built directly into core instruction so teachers can flexibly respond to student needs while maintaining grade-level expectations. Each lesson begins with a Spark Your Learning task that leverages students’ prior knowledge to tackle new concepts and skills, and the high-quality tasks that follow invite students to select and apply the representations that make sense to them—asking questions such as “Why did you use each representation?” This helps students articulate their reasoning and connect what they already know to new mathematical ideas. Manipulatives are also embedded as a scaffolding tool across language proficiency levels, with supports such as ten frames, counters, and blocks used to help students act out and model mathematical situations, ensuring that hands-on tools are accessible to all learners as they work toward conceptual understanding. This approach allows students to enter problems through representations they recognize and trust, building a bridge between prior learning and new grade-level concepts.

Into Math supports differentiated instruction by providing options for small-group, whole-group, or center-based independent work in every lesson, alongside embedded intervention resources to address all levels of student need. Throughout every aspect of assessment, diagnostic, formative, and summative, teachers are equipped with the resources to intervene early and often, before students are expected to practice independently, helping eliminate frustration and the repetition of errors during practice. HMH’s exclusive Almost There Teacher Tabletop Flipcharts provide one of three types of pulled small-group instruction for every lesson, with downloadable PDFs available for On-Level and Ready for More as well, ensuring teachers have what they need for all levels of pulled small groups.

Beyond small-group instruction, Into Math includes a range of lesson-level differentiation resources available on HMH Ed. Intervention activities, labeled Learn the Math and Do the Math, provide structured, grade-appropriate support for students who need additional help mastering key concepts, while Reteach and Challenge resources for every lesson offer additional options for reinforcing or extending learning. Fluency Worksheets are available as digital resources on Ed. They are referenced in the Teacher Guide on the Differentiation and Practice page, offering structured opportunities for students to reinforce skills and strategies. Games provide short, collaborative routines that promote distributed practice and fact fluency in interactive ways. Together, these resources give teachers a practical, lesson-aligned toolkit to address a range of student needs without requiring additional planning or searching outside the program.

In collaboration with the English Learners Success Forum (ELSF) and Dr. Kate Kinsella, Into Math provides expansive language supports, routines, and resources that help make the language of mathematics—and therefore the content—more accessible for multilingual learners and every student within the classroom. These resources include a Language Development Resource Guide, Kate Kinsella’s Key Routines, academic vocabulary supports, vocabulary cards, Math Language Routines, Teaching Strategies and Observational Rubrics, cognate support, and UDL supports.

Into Math’s Spanish counterpart, ¡Arriba las Matemáticas!, is a complete Spanish experience in print and digital formats that includes materials for both teachers and students, making everything available for teaching in Spanish.

Into Math includes a redesigned Teacher’s Guide that details how to use the program at every step of the instructional process, a Student Edition with Practice On Your Own, and Practice Plus—a new workbook standard at all grade levels that provides four pages per lesson covering lesson and fluency practice, application, and Train Your Memory. The program also includes Almost There: Small-Group Instruction flipcharts, downloadable Ready for More and On Track small-group guidance, and Module Projects at DOK 4 that incorporate data science topics through a partnership with Tuva Labs. High-quality tasks, digital PDFs and interactives, tutorial videos, and targeted differentiation strategies are embedded into every chapter and lesson, outlined and hyperlinked in editable lesson plans and digital session organizers for quick access.

Into Math includes assessment tools at multiple levels: benchmark assessments, lesson-level diagnostic assessments, and frequent formative assessment opportunities throughout each lesson, with summative assessments and benchmarks allowing for continued analysis of student progress and growth over time. Learning Scales and math discourse prompts invite students to reflect on their learning, share with their peers, and monitor their growth in knowledge and confidence, while actionable reports and automated grouping features on HMH Ed help teachers quickly identify and support students who need additional help. Formative assessment, done early and often, allows for quicker identification of student needs, and when given digitally, offers automatic data and grouping available on Ed.

Into Math is delivered through HMH Ed, where highly effective, interactive whole-class presentations provide teachers with engaging lessons supported by instructional routines and embedded formative assessments. As students enter responses digitally, teachers get real-time insights into student thinking, supported by an AI summarization tool that analyzes learner responses to identify trends and outliers. Into Math also includes an adaptive practice resource powered by a skill-based AI engine that adjusts in real time to meet each student’s needs, rewards both academic proficiency and positive learning behaviors to foster a growth mindset, and provides powerful data insights to inform instruction. The Desmos graphing calculator is embedded within the program for Grades 6–Algebra 1, and NWEA MAP Growth data flow integration is available, allowing districts to connect existing assessment data directly to the platform.
