BOSTON – Global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) and the Boston Celtics today launched SCORE with Go Math! Academy and the Boston Celtics, an online math resource for New England schools based on a basketball-themed version of HMH’s Go Math! Academy. Featuring Celtics center-forward Tyler Zeller and Celtics mascot Lucky the Leprechaun, this special series of math problems and videos illustrates key math concepts, like geometry and measurement, using real world examples from the basketball court.
The SCORE web portal is available for students in grades three through five in all public, private, parochial and charter schools within 75 miles of the TD Garden in Boston. Visitors to the webpage will be encouraged to participate in a friendly, regional math challenge by solving five engaging basketball-themed math problems developed by HMH learning architects. The school with the most participants will win an in-school visit from Lucky and a Celtics player, while all participating students will receive a free trial of Go Math! Academy and a downloadable poster of Lucky.
“At Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, we are always seeking new and exciting ways to encourage curiosity,” said Mary Cullinane, Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs, HMH. “Our collaboration with the Celtics on SCORE creates an ideal opportunity to deliver dynamic educational content in a fun and interactive way to teachers, students and families. Good luck to all, and may the best team win!”
“We are very excited to launch the SCORE math competition with our partner Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, as this initiative will grant students the opportunity to incorporate basketball content into a fun educational program,” said Celtics Team President Rich Gotham.
Built on the proven success of HMH’s GO Math! curriculum, used by more than seven million elementary school students in the US, Go Math! Academy is an online learning tool which provides kids with a fun way to catch up, keep up, or get ahead in math — both at home and in the classroom. Using rewards and incentives to encourage independent math practice, the tool builds confidence and skills in a self-paced environment and provides students with an engaging and entertaining way to extend learning beyond the school day.
SCORE broadens an already fruitful partnership between two Boston-based institutions which collaborate regularly to promote literacy in schools throughout the city. From the redesign and renovation of the Ellis Elementary School library in Roxbury, Mass. to co-sponsorship of the Read to Achieve program across the city of Boston, HMH and the Celtics are excited to expand their partnership for the first time beyond the Boston Public School system to surrounding New England schools.
HMH’s dedicated corporate citizenship efforts includes additional partnerships, employee volunteerism programs, a multimillion dollar annual book donation program, employee/company gift-matching and Community Investment Councils — location-based employee committees charged with creating opportunities for colleagues to have a positive impact on the community.
The SCORE contest will end at 11:59 PM ET on June 10, 2015. Click here to learn more about the contest and for a full list of rules and regulations.
